Green Island Organics Ltd v Q.B.E. Insurance (Europe) Ltd
The Hastie Stable's Michael Upton represented the successful pursuers in a proof in the Commercial Court which was stated in evidence to be the first contested claim by a fish farmer for payment for the loss of stock as a result of sea lice, Green Island Organics Ltd. v. Q.B.E. Insurance (Europe) Ltd. Evidence was heard about the biology of sea lice, the development of aquacultural insurance, and underwriting practice at Lloyds of London. On 27 January 20011 Lord Menzies ruled that sea lice are a "disease" and upheld Green Island Organic's entire claim.
